The John Studies Lesson Three

PERSONAL DISCOVERY

In Lesson 2, we learned that:

Christ died for us.
He rose again.
He has done all that is necessary for salvation.
In order to receive this salvation, we must believe in Christ.

1. What great question must we all answer sooner or later? (18:38)
_______________________________________________________________________

2. What did Christ say in answer to this question? (17:17) _______________________________________________________________________
Jesus Himself gives us the reason for all error. He told the false religious leaders of His day: "… Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God." (Matthew 22:29)

14. In John 14:6, what is the first of three titles given to Jesus?
_______________________________________________________________________

15. Did Jesus mention any other intermediary between the Father and man, except Himself? (14:6) _______________________________________________________________________
The apostle Paul expressed it this way: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus". (1 Timothy 2:5)

16. Will anyone succeed if he attempts to go to God through any other mediator? (14:6) _______________________________________________________________________
From our studies thus far we have seen that the heart of the Gospel is the good news that "Christ died for our sins." In this single phrase we have summarized the facts God wants us to know and accept - that is (1) that we are sinners; (2) that the penalty for sin is death; (3) that Jesus Christ, through the shedding of His blood on the Cross, paid this death penalty for us.

Christ has done everything that is necessary for salvation. It is for this reason that the one thing that God commands us to do if we are to receive His salvation is: "… Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ…" (Acts 16:31)

But some will say, "I believe already." However the word "believe", as used in the Bible, does not mean simply a mental assent to certain facts or doctrines, but rather, a complete trust in a Person. To believe in Jesus in the Biblical sense, then, is something quite different from believing about Napoleon. It is an act of the will, and not of the intellect only.

Jesus told certain Jews: "… Ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life." To "believe", then, means to come directly and personally to Jesus Christ for salvation.

17. After telling Thomas to put his hand in His side, what did Jesus ask him to do? (20:27) _______________________________________________________________________

18. Did Thomas believe? (20:29) _______________________________________________________________________

19. Can you believe in the Lord even though you have not seen Him? (20:29)
_______________________________________________________________________

20. Who was the first person to whom Thomas spoke when he believed? (20:28)
_______________________________________________________________________

21. Who is the first person to whom we should speak when we believe?
_______________________________________________________________________

22. What did Jesus ask the man whom He had healed from blindness? (9:35)
_______________________________________________________________________

23. After Jesus had identified Himself as the Son of God, what did this man say? (9:38)
_______________________________________________________________________

24. Who was the first person to learn that this man had believed? (9:38)
_______________________________________________________________________

25. Suppose that you say to Christ: "Lord Jesus, I believe that I am a sinner and condemned of God, and I believe that you died for all my sins. I now receive you as my personal Saviour." If you "come" to Him in this manner, will He save you? (6:37) _______________________________________________________________________

Have you come to Jesus? ________________ When? _________________

Do you believe, then that He has saved you? ___________________

Note: Can one be sure that he possesses eternal life? YES, He can, as we shall see from the fourth and last lesson of this series.
