In Old Testament times, a lamb without spot or blemish was killed and sacrificed as an Innocent substitute, making atonement for the sins of the people. This was a symbol of Jesus Christ, the true Lamb of God who was later to come into the World. John the Baptist recognized Jesus as this sinless substitute who was to die for our sins.
