Lesson Objectives And Overviews
1 YOU and Your Salvation
How to Know You Have Eternal Life
Lesson Objective: To lead the disciple to a complete assurance of salvation and an understanding of daily forgiveness of sin.
Lesson Overview: Lack of real assurance will keep a Christian from growing spiritually and from telling others about Christ. This lesson must be taught carefully so that the person comes to a clear understanding of whether or not he is saved. If he is saved, sin does not break his saving relationship to God, but it disrupts his daily fellowship with God. A person can have peace with God without having the peace of God. Spend time explaining saving faith. Accepting Christ is not a process of time, but a point of decision.
2 YOU and Your Baptism and Church Membership
How to Identify with Christ and join a Bible-Believing Church
Lesson Objective: To teach the disciple the necessity of believer's baptism and church membership for the obedient Christian. To see the disciple baptized and become a member of your church.
Lesson Overview: Baptism is one of the most misunderstood teachings in the Bible, yet Scripture is clear in its teaching on baptism. Baptism should not be presented as an option, but as obedience to Christ's command. Though not necessary for salvation, baptism is the first step of obedience for the Christian. It is important that you know your disciple's church background at this point. Identifying with a group of believers through church membership is the next logical and biblical step following identifying with Christ in baptism. Approach this lesson lovingly, but firmly.
3 YOU and Your Prayers
How to Talk to God and Get Answers
Lesson Objective: To teach the disciple the great privilege of prayer. To help him establish a regular prayer life.
Lesson Overview: Prayer is asking and receiving. We must know how to pray, when to pray, what to pray, and with what motives to pray. Prayer provides the channel to confess our sins to God and the motivation to keep from sin so that our prayers will be answered. Teach the disciple to pray specifically and simply. Help him organize a prayer list.
4 YOU and Your Changing Life
How to Live As a Christian in a Sinful World
Lesson Objective: To teach the disciple sanctification and separation by showing him biblical principles of conduct. To encourage him to change in areas where he is disobedient.
Lesson Overview: Hopefully by this point you have noticed a change in the disciple's life. Spiritual growth will continue only as the disciple chooses to obey God in living a separated life. The first part of the lesson covers the general principles of Christian living. The last part challenges the disciple to specifically apply these principles to his life. Be prepared for honest, open discussion at this point. Reinforce that knowledge of biblical principles is the only 'conviction' he needs before making decisions to change. This lesson is vital. Approach it prayerfully.
5 YOU and Your Bible
How to Increase Your Knowledge of God and His Word
Lesson Objective: To give the disciple an overall view of the origin, purpose, and meaning of the Bible. To stress the importance of faithful Bible study for spiritual growth. To help him begin a daily devotional time.
Lesson Overview: Imagine how a young Christian views the Bible. He has understood enough of the Bible to be saved, but his knowledge beyond that is limited. Reassure him that he has the greatest teacher in the world, the Holy Spirit, to guide him. Bible study should not be simply learning more about the Bible, but learning more about God, knowing Him that we may be more like Him. Stress the authority of the Bible as God's Word. Remind the disciple that obedience to the Bible is foundational to continued Christian growth. Give several suggestions of how to begin a time of daily Bible study.
6 YOU and Your Family
How to Understand Your Place in the Home
Lesson Objective: To explain God's order of authority in the home. To challenge the disciple to fulfill his God-given responsibilities in the home.
Lesson Overview: By this time you should have a thorough knowledge of the disciple's family background. Divorce, unsaved family members, etc., will influence how the disciple views the family and his place in it. Emphasize the scriptural principles in the lesson that apply to his particular situation. Pray with the disciple about his unsaved family members. Two key words in teaching about the family are unselfishness and responsibility. Carefully deal with any bitterness toward other family members.
7 YOU and Your Money
How to Give Cheerfully to Support God's Work
Lesson Objective: To teach the disciple the proper attitude toward material things. To encourage him to begin the biblical practice of tithing.
Lesson Overview: A Christian should have an entirely different attitude toward material things than an unsaved person has. Teach your disciple that getting saved does not guarantee material wealth or business success, but illustrate to him from your own experience that God provides for those who obey His command to give. Giving to the work of the Lord should not be seen as as duty, but as a privilege.
8 YOU and Your New Responsibilities
How to Explain to Others How They Can Be Saved
Lesson Objective: To teach the command of Christ to witness. To take the disciple soulwinning with you. To challenge him to commit himself to the next session of the Netcasters Soulwinning Course (available from Preach the Word Ministries).
Lesson Overview: Witnessing should also be seen as a great privilege. It is, however, absolutely essential to be an obedient Christian. Share with the disciple your own struggles and victories in soulwinning. (Make sure you are right with the Lord in this area.) Take the disciple with you soulwinning at least one time. Assure him that he will not have to do any of the talking! Challenge him to witness to his unsaved family members and to sign the commitment form for the next session of the Netcasters Soulwinning Course.
