The Fabulous Story Of Spurgeon's Sermons
Spurgeon once wrote: "I have one great favour
to ask of all readers of the sermons, and that is, that they will try to spread them abroad, and increase the number
of regular subscribers. What has been good to you will be good for others if the Lord bless it. If you cannot preach
yourself, you can distribute the word spoken by others." It is
in answer to this call that the Spurgeon Collection was conceived.
It was the standard practice of Spurgeon to preach three times weekly
- twice on Sunday, and once on Thursday evening - the Sunday morning sermon was usually selected for publication
the following Thursday of that week. Price: one penny. These sermons were all taken in shorthand. It is estimated
that over 100 million copies were sold by the year 1905. W. Robertson Nicoll wrote: "Spurgeon's sermons are
invariably worth buying, and the man who has a set of them possesses a very good theological library."
From 1855 to 1892 (37 volumes), Spurgeon's Sunday morning sermons were published weekly. After his death, unpublished
Sunday evening and Thursday evening sermons were published in Volumes 38 to 63; some of these sermons were from
the New Park Street Pulpit from 1855 to 1861 and not previously published.
The complete set comprises 63 substantial volumes containing 3,563 separate discourses. |
