Psalm 30

Unbelief has no songs and no symphonies.

Carnality and unholiness do not create oratorios or hymns.

When Robert Ingersol died, the printed notice of his funeral read, "There will be no singing." Singing belongs to "pure religion," and "true holiness."

These stately, dignified, and triumphant songs of the Holy Bible were born of GOD, inspired by the SPIRIT, and inbreathed into holy men. In the first verse of Psalm thirty there is an interesting play upon words. "I will extol thee, 0 Lord; for thou hast lifted me up."

The word extol means to lift up. "I will lift thee up, 0 Lord, because thou hast lifted me up." "I will extol thee, 0 Lord, because thou hast extolled me." The poet is thus lifting up the lifter up. By hearts and hands, and by lip and life, the psalmist lifts up the lifter up. This is as it should be. If we extol CHRIST, He will lift us up. If we lift Him up, He will extol us. The action is mutually beneficial and blessed.
